Few of us will ever reach the lofty position of king in the land (or in our case President). It is without doubt that the most notable king in all Biblical history is David. He was not perfect. But, the Bible declares he is “a man after God’s heart (Acts 13:22).” He was used by God to give us the majority of the Psalms. Psalm 21 is probably not at the top of the list of favorite Psalms. But, there is a message in it for us.
The first seven verses are filled with the account of God’s work in making David king over Israel. It is a celebration of God’s work.
There are many reasons for David to celebrate God’s work.
- God is his strength and salvation (Psalm 21:1)
- God answers his prayers (Psalm 21:2)
- God blesses him (Psalm 21:3)
- God gives him life (Psalm 21:4)
- God bestows splendor and majesty on him (Psalm 21:5)
- God makes him a blessing and gives him joy (Psalm 21:6)
- God’s steadfast love secures him (Psalm 21:7)
It is verse 6 that we bring into focus today. Verse six could be translated, “make him a source of blessing forever.” How would God do this? After all, forever is a long time. The answer is simple. It is through David, a son would be given whose throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:4-17). Who is this king? It is Jesus Christ the Messiah.
Paul reminds the Ephesians that we have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). It is an amazing thought that we, as followers of Jesus Christ, are blessed today because God chose to make David a source of blessing forever!
