Are You Convicted?

Read

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Reflect

Paul’s statement concerning the inspiration and purpose of Scripture records four prepositional phrases that describe the purpose of Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The second is that the Scriptures are profitable for reproof.

“Reproof” means that something is tested to prove. Manufacturers are familiar with this concept. A product sample is subjected to different tests to prove its quality. In the same way, when you and I give ourselves to the reading, study, and meditation upon the Scriptures, they work in our lives to prove us.

When our lives are put to the test of the Scriptures, there are times that conviction comes upon us. What is the purpose of this conviction? It is to reveal to us there is a response to be made.

This is the key. When conviction comes upon us, it is for our good to move us toward Christ-likeness. In other words, a convicted person will either respond negatively, rejecting the truth and thereby remaining unchanged. Or, he will respond positively, conforming to the truth and becoming more like Christ.

So, here is the heart of the matter – Do you believe the Scriptures can bring about life transformation? Here is the challenge, don’t approach the Scriptures from only an academic perspective. Instead, approach them as God’s Word to you to bring about change in your life.

Respond

  1. Do you approach the Scriptures academically or as life-giving?
  2. Do you have a plan for reading, studying and meditating on the Scriptures?
  3. Are you an active participant in a Bible study in your local church?
