All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
Reflect
Paul’s statement concerning the inspiration and purpose of Scripture records four prepositional phrases that describe the purpose of the Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The first says that the Scriptures are profitable for teaching.
The danger, especially for those of us who have been in church most of our lives, is that we might come to a place where we say, “I already know this.” The phrase “Familiarity breeds contempt” is especially on point. Herein lies the problem, if we believe we already know it, we fail to remain teachable. We must be reminded that we have much to learn from the Scriptures as long as we live in this world in an unredeemed body.
The second danger is to fail to realize that the teaching of the Scriptures is not just to gain information. The teaching of the Scriptures is for life transformation. We are not called to come to Christ and then remain the same. We are called to become like Christ.
Respond
So, the question before us is, “Are you teachable?” But, before you answer too quickly, you need to take inventory.
- Do I regularly read, study, and meditate upon the Word of God?
- Do I regularly gather with my church family for worship and Bible study?
- Do I consciously put into practice the things I learned from God’s Word?
